Dongxiang Ethnic Minority

The Dongxiang ethnic minority, numbering about 373.772 in total, can be found mainly in Hui Autonomous Precture in Linxia in Gansu province, with the remainder scattered in Lanzhou and Dingxi in Gansu province, Hui Autonomous prefecture in Ningxia and Uygur Autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang. The Dongxiang language belongs to Mongolia Austronesian of Altai Phylum and cinsists of 3 dialects—Suoonan, Wangjiaji and Sijiaji. Most young Dongxiangs also know Chinese. Thus it doesnot have its own character set. Nowadays, Chinese language and characters are widely used by the Dongxiang people. The Dongxiangs believe in Islam. They mainly live in Dongxiang in Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Linxia in Gansu province, so they were named the Dongxiang ethnic minority. The Dongxiang's ancestral roots can be traced back to the Mongolians. After 13 th centuries, they turned to be Muslims. In the later half of 14 th centuries, people from different ethnic minority began to form a new ethnic minority. Previously identified by various names such as “Dongxiang Huis” and “Mongolian Dongxiang”, they were formally named Dongxiang ethnic minority after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The Dongxiang mainly engage in agriculture, especially in potato planting. The Dongxiang's “three treasures”, namely apricot, melon and fruit and date, enjoy good reputation throughout China.
